Mark August 15 on your calendars, Unicorn Frappuccino lovers. If you were online in 2017, you may not remember what you ate that week, but you likely remember the violently pink-and-blue sugar rush that briefly took over Starbucks and the internet.
The drink made a statement at Coachella this year, as if Starbucks were checking whether the public was ready for a comeback. Apparently, the answer was a resounding yes, because the chain has now confirmed the ultra-popular beverage is popping up next month for a summer weekend cameo.
Starbucks says the Unicorn Frappuccino “will return to Starbucks coffeehouses around the world for one magical weekend to close out the summer starting August 15.” That finally gives fans something concrete to plan around, though it also gives baristas a very specific weekend to suddenly need to call out of work.
Before Starbucks shared the exact return date, the initial comeback tease had already sent fans spiraling. The first announcement racked up hundreds of thousands of likes on Starbucks’ Instagram, and the comments quickly turned into a reunion for everyone who had apparently been waiting years for this exact moment.
“😍😍😍😍 YES!!!! I want it!!!🦄🦄🦄,” one person wrote. Another said, “Omgg I can’t believe it!!!!!! Tysmmm!” And for plenty of people, the excitement came with a side of nostalgia: “OMGGGGG I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR SO LONG MY CHILDHOOD SELF IS HAPPY THANK YOU STARBUCKS,” posted one Unicorn Frap obsessive, with an equally enthusiastic comment that read, “Im sorry WHAT ARE WE JOKING MY 14 YR OLD SELF IS SCREAMINGGG ON THE INSIDE.”
The return also opened the floodgates for a completely different Frappuccino campaign. A big chunk of the comments had less to do with the Unicorn drink and more to do with people once again demanding the S’mores Frappuccino. “Okay but what about the s’mores,” one person wrote. Another said, “What do we want, S’mores. When do we want it, S’mores.” Others kept the pressure on with “S’MORES FRAP NOW🙏” and “Any chance s’mores is coming back? Asking for a friend. 😬”
And apparently, the S’mores campaign worked. Starbucks has since brought back the original S’mores Frappuccino for the first time in six years, with a nationwide launch on July 1. The chain also added a S’mores Cold Brew with Marshmallow Cold Foam, so all that begging apparently paid off.
The Unicorn Frappuccino is still one of the chain’s most infamous menu items, and clearly, people are more than ready for round two. If you are one of them, congratulations. Your most colorful weekend of the summer is almost here.
