CHIPOTLE IS GIVING AWAY FREE BURRITOS & THE INTERNET HAS STOMACH CONCERNS: 'QUESTIONABLE TIMING'

I’m generally very supportive of free food, but even a good giveaway can arrive at a very awkward time. Chipotle is moving ahead with a $1 million free burrito promotion tied to the FIFA World Cup final on July 19, giving fans a chance to score free food during the match’s second hydration break.

The chain is making people work a little for it, too. During the break, Chipotle will post an Instagram video that turns a lemonade into a shell game with one lemonade, three Chipotle water cups and one code hiding at the end. The first 100,000 people to text that code to 888-222 will get a free entree.

The problem is that it’s happening while a Cyclospora outbreak has made fast food lettuce feel a little more loaded than usual. To be clear, Chipotle hasn’t been linked to the outbreak, but because they serve plenty of bowls, burritos and salads with lettuce, the internet wasn’t exactly going to let the timing pass quietly.

On July 16, @polymarket posted about the giveaway, writing, “JUST IN: Chipotle to move forward with its $1 million free burrito giveaway, despite the rapidly spreading Cyclospora outbreak.”

From there, people turned the public-health-adjacent food coincidence into a comment section about their stomachs.

“Having difficulties in making a choice between free burrito and parasitic infection is insane,” one person wrote. Another predicted, “This is going to cost $1 billion in toilet paper.”

Others leaned into Chipotle’s existing reputation for, let’s say, digestive drama. “Cuz Chipotle doesn’t already cause enough diarrhea,” one person joked. Another wrote, “So it’ll still be a normal Chipotle experience?”

Some people focused less on the free burrito and more on the calendar. “Free burrito, questionable timing honestly,” one person wrote.

Others went straight for the obvious joke: “Explosive diarrhea is the consolation prize.”

Again, it’s worth repeating that Chipotle hasn’t been tied to the current Cyclospora outbreak, and a free burrito giveaway isn’t exactly the same thing as a food safety advisory. Still, timing is timing. When there is a parasite outbreak in the news and your menu involves lettuce, even the phrase “free burrito” starts doing a little too much work.
