I can spend an embarrassing amount of time trying to decide what to eat. Not because there’s nothing available, but because there are suddenly too many possible versions of dinner, and every single one starts sounding wrong the second I get close to choosing it. The longer I scroll, the worse it gets, so I fully understand the appeal of telling an app what you’re craving and letting it handle the rest.
That’s the idea behind Ask DoorDash, a new feature that, instead of forcing people to search the old-fashioned way, is built for those half-formed food thoughts we all have.
If you’ve ever abandoned a cart halfway through because adding every single ingredient one by one made you want to lie down, this is clearly for you. Rather than typing in a restaurant name or building a grocery list item by item, users can describe what they are in the mood for, upload a recipe, or ask for a certain kind of dinner reservation and get more tailored results back. You can still swap products around afterward, but at least the heavy lifting is already done.
DoorDash says the feature can now help with restaurant discovery and grocery shopping, and a reservations version is on the way to help with dining out. That means instead of clicking through filters and hoping for the best, the feature is supposed to help narrow things down based on the kind of night you are trying to have.
In a statement, DoorDash co-founder Andy Fang said, “We've spent over a decade building an app that puts everything in your city at your fingertips, but more options shouldn't mean more work. Now you can search DoorDash in your own words to find exactly what you want. And we know if the vegetarian option you prefer is on the menu before recommending a restaurant, or that you recently ordered flour and sugar before stocking up on groceries. The app works harder so you don’t have to.”
The feature is available now in select areas on iOS for restaurants and groceries, with a broader rollout coming in the weeks ahead. This is great news for me personally, because I spent 35 minutes last night trying to choose between tacos, a burger, and a few slices of pizza, and some guidance would’ve been really nice.
